A Growing Understanding

Even though more than 35 million Americans experience migraines, there is a lot of misinformation about them. There are various symptoms and characteristics of migraines that can affect individuals. Migraines can be broken down into seven distinct subtypes.

Migraine Without Aura

These migraines are very common and involve a moderate or severe headache that occurs with either little or no warning. In many cases, there is pain present on just one side of the head, and it is accompanied by several symptoms, including blurred vision, shifts in mood, sensitivity to sounds, smells, and brightness, and more.

Migraine Without Headache

This type of migraine involves no headache but can cause vomiting, visual problems, nausea, and other symptoms associated with migraines.

Migraine with Aura

This is another common migraine that is characterized by disturbances in vision as well as symptoms that can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour after the headache starts. Visual disturbances can cause blindness in one or both eyes and can occur with no pain. Symptoms include confusion, tingling, muscle weakness, and more.

Migraine with Brainstem Aura

Migraines like this often affect children and adolescents. The symptoms are similar to migraines with auras without muscle weakness. It is associated with changing hormones and can cause double-vision, sharp pain in the head, dizziness, and other symptoms.

Hemiplegic Migraine

Hemiplegic migraines are rare and cause temporary paralysis that can last for numerous days. Warning signs include vertigo and problems speaking along with a host of others.

Retinal Migraine

These are also rare and are characterized by visual disturbances that can result in loss of sight in one eye. A headache may also be experienced.

Chronic Migraine

Chronic migraines can last for more than 15 days and may be resistant to medication treatment. They also tend to be frequent and debilitating, making them the most difficult migraine type to treat and manage effectively.
